Christmas back in the Maritimes

Ah, some of the memories of being home at this time of year include listening to C100Fm  www.c100fm.com which is the main top 40 station for most of Nova Scotia. This year, they have a Santa sitin, whereby you can call the station and talk to Santa on the air live. My children were able to call from Japan!
What our Christmas dinner table looked like in Canada when I was a kid. This shot was taken on my trip home. My daughter and step-cousin John.

My father was able to get himself so Christmas underware.

What I don't miss are the snowstorms. The Northumberland Ferries actually had to finish their season early due to the weather and ice build up. As this shot shows, the straight needs to be ice free for a sail. And as of Boxing Day, December 26, 2013, Nova Scotia is to be hit by it's third storm in ten days!
I'll post some snow shots later

Trailer Park Boys in Japan?

I found this post office with their English sign messed up. Wonder if some Maritimers had some fun here in Japan.

PEI 2014 NHK special

On www.cbc.ca there is an article about

Japan airing 156-part series on Green Gables translator

P.E.I. hoping Hanako Muraoka profile will bring tourists.

Hopefully, a few more Japanese tourists will visit the east coast. Just too bad it's so darn far to fly.

Chess anyone?

My son and I were thrilled to find a garden chess set at Kindred Spirits Inn and Cottages. We had fun playing with it.

Luggage

So what do you do when facing a very long trip somewhere and want a unique piece of luggage which you'll find quickly!

Why not get an army duffel bag!

For my birthday, I bought a Highlander Pro-Force Loader British Army style kit bag. It's olive green, with a back pack system, and three pockets. Two sides, and a main compartment.

I thought this would be good for my trip. It was, but at the last moment, I decided to sew a Canadian flag on one of the pocket flaps. Good thing, as there were about 20 other olive green duffle bags, as about 20 US military personnel were on the flight I went to Canada on. I flew via Chicago.

Food from home.

My Dad gave me a cookbook Out of Old Nova Scotia Kitchens, published by Nimbus in 1989

I also was given several envelopes of gravy mixes. One was of the hot chicken sandwhich by Lonry's

So tonights dinner is a frypan chicken stew with dumplings, potatoes, onions carrots and chicken.

Hertz Rental Cars

I must say a big thank you to Joey at the Halifax International Airport for getting us this Volvo car. It was an all wheel drive, with great gas milage.
It would have been nice to have this eh?! It's my friend's Porsche in Japan.

North Rustico, Prince Edward Island

I had gone to North Rustico as a kid. We stayed in nearby Cavendish but went sight seeing in North Rustico.

Tim Hortons Coffee and Donuts

This is a Canadian institution. It's dear to the heart of all Canadians.
The last of the Timbits and a single donut. Timbits are small bite sized donuts which are extremely popular with Canadians. No visit home is complete without getting a box.

A French Vanilla coffee. I had to get my wife a triple triple.

Hector heritage quay, Pictou, Nova Scotia, September, 2013

It's hard to believe that it's been a month since I was home. It's also hard to believe I'm still going through my pictures of the trip.
Pictou harbor with a little bit of the Hector on the left.

Leena with the Hector. I was part of the 84th Regiment when we laid down the keel. I asked about, and was told the masts and rigging had been taken down for repairs but it may also have been that the management of the site is having problems.
The other problem was that we had no time to go inside to see the museum as it opened at 11am and we wanted to visit the Museum of Industry over in Stellerton.

Lionstone Motel and Cottages, Pictou, Nova Scotia

This was a nice little tourist motel and cottage place we lucked into getting a cabin the night we came back from PEI. The cabin was a two bedroom double bed room with a kitchen and a full bath.

The room my son and I used.

COWS Ice-cream, BOOM Burger and Anne of Green Gables choclates
